Gingival recession is rather common and frustrating mucogingival defect encountered in dental practise. Clinically characterised by sensitivity, aesthetic challenges and inadequate oral hygiene practise is encountered. Symptomatic management and patient reassurance have been the mainstay of therapy for a long time. However a range of non-surgical as well as surgical interventions do exist and have proven successful. Simple therapies like use of desensitising agents and soft toothbrushes to complex procedures like root coverage using pedicle or free grafts have shown great success. Case selection and a focus on addressing the patients primary concern while keeping in mind the underlying cause may lead to successful treatment outcomes. Methods A review off basic mucogingival anatomy focusing on the gingival biotype and bioform and their role in recession. The relationship of underlying bone to gingival health will also be reviewed. A variety of clinical cases will be used to discuss the best practise in case selection, and choice of intervention methods. Finally recession around dental implants will be discussed to complete the picture.
