Description

This Continuing Medical Education (CME) session focuses on abnormal uterine bleeding (AUB), a common gynecological condition affecting women across different age groups with significant impact on quality of life and health outcomes. The session will provide a comprehensive overview of the etiology, classification (PALM-COEIN system), clinical evaluation, and evidence-based management of AUB. Participants will review structured approaches to history taking, physical examination, and appropriate use of diagnostic tools including laboratory investigations, imaging, and endometrial sampling. The session will also cover medical and surgical management options tailored to patient age, etiology, severity of bleeding, and reproductive goals. Emphasis will be placed on patient-centered care, early identification of serious underlying pathology, and integration of AUB management into routine gynecological practice.

Objectives

By the end of this CME session, participants will be able to: Define abnormal uterine bleeding (AUB) and describe its classification using the PALM-COEIN system. Identify common causes of AUB across different age groups, including structural and non-structural etiologies. Conduct a systematic clinical evaluation, including history, physical examination, and appropriate investigations. Differentiate between benign and serious causes of AUB requiring urgent intervention or referral. Apply evidence-based medical management options, including hormonal and non-hormonal therapies. Describe indications for surgical interventions such as endometrial ablation, hysteroscopy, and hysterectomy. Provide patient-centered counseling considering fertility desires, treatment preferences, and quality of life. Integrate multidisciplinary care approaches to improve outcomes in women with AUB.
