Description

PRINCIPLES OF SURGICAL TOILET/DEBRIDEMENT

Objectives

The objectives of surgical toilet (debridement) are to remove devitalized tissue, reduce bacterial load, prevent infection, assess the extent of injury, and promote optimal wound healing by creating a clean wound bed suitable for closure or reconstruction. Its principles include maintaining strict aseptic technique, ensuring adequate exposure, performing thorough irrigation, removing all non-viable tissue while preserving healthy tissue, achieving hemostasis, carefully assessing all tissue layers, protecting vital structures, and repeating the procedure when necessary to ensure complete wound management.
