Anaesthesia considerations for cleft lip and palate

Starting on:

Ending on:

Venue:

Description

The session focuses on the anaesthetic management of patients undergoing cleft lip and cleft palate surgery, covering the disease burden, embryology, associated syndromes, preoperative assessment, airway management, anaesthetic techniques, regional anaesthesia, postoperative care, and peri-operative complications. The training aims to enhance participants' knowledge and skills in providing safe perioperative anaesthetic care to paediatric patients with cleft lip and palate deformities.

Objectives

Describe the epidemiology, classification, aetiology, and embryology of cleft lip and palate deformities. Identify common syndromes associated with cleft lip and palate and understand their anaesthetic implications. Conduct a comprehensive preoperative assessment, including the evaluation of congenital heart disease, obstructive sleep apnoea, nutritional status, and difficult airway risk factors. Discuss airway management strategies for both routine and difficult paediatric cleft surgery cases, including the use of videolaryngoscopy and rescue airway techniques. Explain the principles of maintenance of anaesthesia, fluid management, temperature regulation, and shared airway management during cleft surgery. Describe multimodal analgesia approaches and the role of regional anaesthesia techniques such as infraorbital and palatine nerve blocks. Recognize and manage postoperative airway complications, including airway obstruction, laryngospasm, and respiratory depression.
