Description
The training, ELECTRICAL ACTIVITY OF THE HEART/PACEMAKER, provides participants with knowledge of the heart's electrical conduction system, cardiac action potentials, electrocardiography (ECG) interpretation, and cardiac pacing. It covers the physiology of cardiac electrical activity, ECG fundamentals and interpretation, heart rate assessment, indications and types of pacemakers, complications associated with pacemaker insertion, patient education, and perioperative considerations for patients with pacemakers undergoing surgery.
Objectives
Define the normal cardiac conduction system, including the SA node, AV node, Bundle of His, bundle branches, and Purkinje fibers.
Explain the mechanisms of automaticity, excitability, and conductivity in cardiac cells.
Correlate the phases of the cardiac action potential with ion movements.
Define ECG and describe its role in assessing cardiac electrical activity.
Identify and interpret normal ECG waves.
Apply ECG findings to clinical decision-making in perioperative settings.
List the indications for temporary and permanent pacemaker insertion.
Describe the different types of pacemakers.
Explain potential complications associated with pacemakers.
Discuss the role of anaesthesia in the management of patients with pacemakers undergoing surgery.
