Description

This training activity focuses on building practical competence in the assessment and emergency management of foreign body obstructions and acute asthma exacerbations in the Accident & Emergency (A&E) setting. It is designed for doctors, nurses, EMTs, and other frontline healthcare providers involved in emergency care. Through interactive lectures, case-based discussions, and clinical scenarios, participants are guided to:

Objectives

Training Objectives Define key concepts related to airway anatomy, foreign bodies, asthma, and asthma exacerbations in the A&E setting. Identify and classify foreign bodies affecting different parts of the airway and gastrointestinal tract (nasal, oesophageal, laryngeal, tracheobronchial). Recognize clinical presentations and red flag symptoms of foreign body obstruction and acute asthma exacerbations. Differentiate asthma exacerbation severity (mild, moderate, severe, status asthmaticus) using clinical features, peak expiratory flow, oxygen saturation, and blood gas analysis. Apply appropriate initial and emergency management strategies for foreign body removal based on location, type, and patient stability. Implement the Golden Hour Protocol for acute severe asthma in A&E. Interpret baseline investigations and ABG trends to guide escalation of asthma management. Manage refractory asthma and status asthmaticus, including use of second-line therapies and indications for ICU referral and intubation. Apply GINA stepwise asthma management principles for long-term control and relapse prevention. Educate patients effectively on asthma control, correct inhaler use, and the importance of adherence to controller therapy. Perform appropriate triage and decision-making for EMTs, nurses, and doctors in emergency scenarios involving asthma and foreign bodies.
