Histology and cytology: Approach to diagnosing thyroid nodules.

Starting on:

Ending on:
Jun 26, 2025

Description

This activity provides a comprehensive overview of the histological and cytological evaluation of thyroid nodules, essential for accurate diagnosis and effective management. Participants will explore the latest diagnostic techniques, interpretative criteria, and the integration of clinical, imaging, and pathological findings. Emphasis will be placed on the role of fine needle aspiration cytology (FNAC), histopathological features, and the application of ancillary studies such as immunohistochemistry and molecular testing. This activity aims to enhance the clinician’s and pathologist’s ability to differentiate benign from malignant lesions, reduce diagnostic uncertainty, and guide appropriate patient care strategies.

Objectives

By the end of this activity, participants will be able to: Describe the common histological and cytological features of thyroid nodules, including benign, malignant, and indeterminate lesions. Explain the role and limitations of fine needle aspiration cytology (FNAC) in the initial evaluation of thyroid nodules. Identify key histopathologic criteria used to distinguish between various thyroid neoplasms and non-neoplastic conditions. Discuss the integration of ancillary techniques such as immunohistochemistry and molecular markers to improve diagnostic accuracy. Apply current guidelines and best practices for the diagnostic approach and clinical management of patients presenting with thyroid nodules.
