Description

Diabetic Ketoacidosis (DKA) is a critical, life-threatening metabolic emergency commonly encountered in both outpatient and inpatient settings. This CME activity provides healthcare practitioners with updated, evidence-based knowledge on the recognition, diagnosis, and management of DKA. The session covers pathophysiology, clinical presentation, diagnostic criteria, fluid and insulin therapy, electrolyte management, monitoring parameters, prevention of complications, and strategies for preventing recurrence. Practical case discussions and guideline-based recommendations are emphasized to improve decision-making and patient outcomes.

Objectives

Explain the pathophysiology of Diabetic Ketoacidosis and how it correlates with clinical signs and symptoms. Identify early warning signs and diagnostic criteria for DKA using clinical assessment and laboratory findings. Apply evidence-based management protocols for fluid resuscitation, insulin therapy, and electrolyte replacement. Monitor patients effectively for treatment response and potential complications such as hypoglycemia, hypokalemia, and cerebral edema. Differentiate DKA from other hyperglycemic emergencies, including Hyperosmolar Hyperglycemic State (HHS).
