Description
Perinatal asphyxia, more appropriately known as hypoxic-ischemic encephalopathy (HIE), is characterized by clinical and laboratory evidence of acute or subacute brain injury due to hypoxia-ischemia. The primary causes of this condition are systemic hypoxemia and/or reduced cerebral blood flow (see the image below). Birth asphyxia causes 840,000 or 23% of all neonatal deaths worldwide. This case audit is following mortality of a neonate with severe HIE hours post delivery
Objectives
To review the case for a neonate who passed on post delivery due to severe HIE and do a Fishbone Analysis
To understand the pathophysiology and Risk Factors of HIE
To gain insight on Mx for HIE
