Description
Hepatic encephalopathy (HE) is a disorder caused by liver dysfunction. It results from the accumulation of toxins, particularly ammonia, that are normally detoxified by the liver but enter the systemic circulation and affect the central nervous system (CNS). It is most commonly associated with chronic liver disease, especially cirrhosis, but can also occur in acute liver failure.
