Description

This Continuing Medical Education (CME) session provides an in-depth review of dentin hypersensitivity, a common but often underdiagnosed oral health condition that significantly impacts patients’ quality of life. The activity will explore the underlying mechanisms, clinical presentation, differential diagnoses, and evidence-based management strategies for hypersensitive dentin. Participants will be guided through current diagnostic criteria, the hydrodynamic theory, risk factors, and contemporary treatment options—including in-office therapies, home-care recommendations, preventive interventions, and patient education techniques. Clinical case discussions and demonstrations of desensitization procedures will support practical skill development and enhance clinical decision-making.

Objectives

By the end of this CME activity, participants should be able to: Understand Pathophysiology Describe the structure of dentin and explain the hydrodynamic theory underlying dentin hypersensitivity. Identify key etiological factors such as gingival recession, enamel loss, dietary acids, and abrasive oral hygiene habits. Clinical Assessment and Diagnosis Recognize the typical signs and symptoms of dentin hypersensitivity. Differentiate dentin hypersensitivity from other causes of dental pain (e.g., pulpitis, cracked tooth syndrome, caries). Apply standardized assessment tools and in-office diagnostic tests. Evidence-Based Management Select appropriate treatment modalities, including fluoride agents, desensitizing toothpastes, varnishes, bonding agents, and laser therapy. Demonstrate proper techniques for in-office desensitization procedures. Provide patients with tailored home-care advice to prevent symptom recurrence. Prevention and Patient Education Counsel patients on risk modification, including diet, brushing techniques, and management of bruxism or erosive habits. Develop personalized preventive plans aimed at long-term control of sensitivity. Quality of Care Improvement Integrate dentin hypersensitivity management into routine dental practice workflows. Utilize case-based analysis to enhance clinical judgement and improve patient satisfaction.
