Description

Activity Description This Continuing Medical Education (CME) session provides a comprehensive overview of erectile dysfunction (ED)—a common but often underreported male sexual health problem with significant physical, psychological, and relational impacts. The activity focuses on understanding the pathophysiology, risk factors, clinical evaluation, and evidence-based treatment approaches for ED. Participants will be guided through current diagnostic frameworks, including history taking, physical examination, relevant laboratory investigations, and use of validated assessment tools. The session also reviews lifestyle modification strategies, pharmacologic therapies (e.g., PDE5 inhibitors), counseling approaches, and indications for specialized interventions such as vacuum devices, intracavernosal injections, and penile implants. Case discussions, patient communication techniques, and multidisciplinary management approaches will be emphasized to help clinicians deliver holistic, patient-centered care.

Objectives

By the end of this CME activity, participants should be able to: 1. Understand Epidemiology & Pathophysiology Describe the prevalence, risk factors, and common etiologies of erectile dysfunction. Explain the vascular, neurologic, hormonal, and psychogenic mechanisms underlying ED. 2. Conduct a Comprehensive Clinical Evaluation Perform structured history taking focusing on sexual, medical, and psychosocial factors. Conduct physical examination and identify comorbid conditions commonly associated with ED (e.g., hypertension, diabetes, cardiovascular disease). Select and interpret appropriate investigations, including hormonal profiles and cardiovascular risk assessment. 3. Apply Evidence-Based Treatment Strategies Select appropriate first-line pharmacologic options and counsel patients on proper medication use. Identify candidates for second-line or advanced interventions such as vacuum erection devices, intraurethral agents, and intracavernosal injections. Recognize indications for referral to urology or mental health specialists. 4. Address Psychosocial & Lifestyle Factors Counsel patients on modifiable risk factors including exercise, diet, smoking, and alcohol consumption. Integrate psychological and relationship counseling where needed to optimize outcomes. 5. Enhance Patient Communication & Follow-Up Build clinician confidence in discussing sensitive sexual health issues with patients and their partners. Develop individualized management plans and follow-up strategies to monitor treatment response and adherence.
