Description
Severe pneumonia is a life-threatening lower respiratory tract infection characterized by extensive lung involvement leading to respiratory distress, hypoxia, and systemic complications. It commonly affects children under 5 years, the elderly, immunocompromised patients (e.g. HIV), and those with chronic illnesses. If not promptly recognized and treated, severe pneumonia may progress to respiratory failure, septic shock, multi-organ dysfunction, and death. Early diagnosis, appropriate antibiotic therapy, oxygen support, and timely referral are critical to improving outcomes.
Objectives
Define severe pneumonia and differentiate it from mild and moderate pneumonia using standard clinical criteria.
Identify common causes and risk factors of severe pneumonia in adults and children.
Recognize early and late clinical features of severe pneumonia requiring urgent intervention.
Apply appropriate diagnostic approaches, including clinical assessment, pulse oximetry, and relevant laboratory or imaging investigations.
Identify complications of severe pneumonia such as sepsis, respiratory failure, and pleural effusion.
Determine indications for referral or escalation of care, including ICU management where available.
