Description

This Continuing Medical Education (CME) session will address the complexities of schizoaffective disorder, a psychiatric condition characterized by the coexistence of mood symptoms and psychotic features. The session will focus on accurate diagnosis, differential considerations, clinical course, and evidence-based management strategies including pharmacotherapy, psychotherapy, and psychosocial interventions. Emphasis will be placed on multidisciplinary approaches, adherence support, relapse prevention, and improving quality of life for affected individuals.

Objectives

By the end of this CME session, participants will be able to: Understanding the Disorder Define schizoaffective disorder and distinguish it from schizophrenia and mood disorders. Describe epidemiology, risk factors, and neurobiological underpinnings. Clinical Features and Diagnosis Recognize the core clinical features and diagnostic criteria (DSM-5/ICD-11). Identify challenges in differentiating schizoaffective disorder from related psychiatric conditions. Apply structured assessments and rating scales in diagnosis and monitoring. Management Approaches Outline pharmacological strategies, including use of antipsychotics, mood stabilizers, and antidepressants. Discuss the role of psychotherapy, psychoeducation, and cognitive rehabilitation in treatment. Implement approaches to enhance adherence and reduce relapse rates. Comorbidities and Functional Impact Identify common comorbid conditions (substance use, anxiety, metabolic syndrome). Address social, occupational, and functional impairments associated with schizoaffective disorder. Multidisciplinary and Long-Term Care Integrate psychiatric, psychological, nursing, social work, and community-based resources in patient care. Explore strategies for stigma reduction, family involvement, and patient empowerment.
