Description

The Safer Anaesthesia From Education (SAFE) Obstetrics Course is a three-day competency-based training programme developed by the World Federation of Societies of Anaesthesiologists (WFSA) and the Association of Anaesthetists to strengthen the knowledge, skills, and confidence of anaesthesia providers involved in obstetric care. The course is designed to improve the safety and quality of anaesthesia services for pregnant women and newborns, particularly in low-resource settings. SAFE Obstetrics focuses on the essential and extended roles of anaesthesia providers in the management of obstetric cases and emergencies. Through interactive lectures, small-group discussions, skills stations, case scenarios, and low-fidelity simulation, participants develop practical competencies in the prevention, recognition, and management of common obstetric emergencies. The curriculum is built around the conditions responsible for the majority of maternal deaths worldwide, including obstetric haemorrhage, sepsis, and eclampsia, while also covering anaesthetic management, complications of anaesthesia, maternal and neonatal resuscitation, airway management, and perioperative care. The course promotes multidisciplinary teamwork, effective communication, patient safety, and evidence-based practice. By combining international best practices with locally relevant approaches, SAFE Obstetrics aims to enhance the capacity of anaesthesia providers to deliver safe, timely, and high-quality care during pregnancy, labour, delivery, and the postpartum period. The programme also supports sustainable capacity building through the training and mentorship of local faculty who can continue delivering the course within their health systems. Since its introduction in 2011, SAFE Obstetrics has been delivered in dozens of countries worldwide and has trained thousands of anaesthesia professionals, contributing to improved maternal and neonatal outcomes through safer obstetric anaesthesia practice.

Objectives

Provide safe and effective anaesthesia care for women undergoing obstetric procedures, including caesarean section and the management of obstetric emergencies. Recognize and manage common causes of maternal morbidity and mortality, including obstetric haemorrhage, hypertensive disorders of pregnancy (eclampsia and pre-eclampsia), sepsis, and maternal collapse. Demonstrate competence in essential obstetric anaesthesia skills, including airway management, spinal anaesthesia, general anaesthesia, fluid management, and perioperative monitoring. Identify, prevent, and manage anaesthetic complications that may arise during pregnancy, labour, delivery, and the postpartum period. Perform maternal and neonatal resuscitation using current evidence-based approaches and best practices. Apply principles of patient safety, including the use of the WHO Surgical Safety Checklist and effective communication during perioperative care. Strengthen teamwork and multidisciplinary collaboration among anaesthesia providers, obstetricians, midwives, nurses, and other healthcare professionals involved in maternal care. Utilize structured approaches to the assessment and management of obstetric emergencies through simulation, case discussions, and practical skills training. Promote quality improvement and continuous learning in obstetric anaesthesia practice within participants' healthcare facilities. Contribute to improved maternal and neonatal outcomes through the delivery of safe, timely, and high-quality obstetric anaesthesia services.
