Venue:

Description

This Continuing Medical Education (CME) session will focus on the development, interpretation, and clinical application of the Defence Forces Memorial Hospital (DFMH) Antibiogram as a critical tool in antimicrobial stewardship and infection management. The session will provide participants with an understanding of local antimicrobial resistance (AMR) patterns and their impact on empiric and targeted antimicrobial therapy. Participants will review the principles of antibiogram preparation, interpretation of susceptibility data, and the role of microbiology laboratories in guiding evidence-based antimicrobial use. The session will also highlight the importance of integrating antibiogram data into clinical decision-making, infection prevention and control (IPC), and institutional antimicrobial stewardship programs to reduce inappropriate antibiotic use and combat antimicrobial resistance. Emphasis will be placed on multidisciplinary collaboration among clinicians, pharmacists, microbiologists, nurses, and infection prevention teams in optimizing patient outcomes and preserving antimicrobial effectiveness.

Objectives

By the end of this CME session, participants will be able to: Define an antibiogram and explain its role in antimicrobial stewardship and infection management. Interpret DFMH antibiogram data to guide empiric and targeted antimicrobial therapy. Identify local antimicrobial resistance trends and their implications for patient care. Apply antibiogram findings in clinical decision-making to improve antibiotic selection and reduce inappropriate antimicrobial use. Recognize the role of microbiology laboratories in surveillance and reporting of antimicrobial resistance patterns. Promote multidisciplinary approaches in antimicrobial stewardship and infection prevention programs. Strengthen strategies for combating antimicrobial resistance (AMR) within the hospital setting.
