• Differentiate dental conditions that require definitive dental treatment alone from those where systemic antibiotics may be indicated. • Identify clinical features suggestive of spreading odontogenic infection or systemic involvement. • Apply antimicrobial stewardship principles when considering antibiotic therapy in dental practice. • Recognise the importance of source control, appropriate referral, and patient safety-netting in the management of odontogenic infections. • Improve communication with patients who request antibiotics when they are not clinically indicated.
Objectives
• Make more evidence-based decisions regarding antibiotic prescribing in common dental presentations.
• Reduce unnecessary antibiotic prescribing for dental pain and localised infections where definitive dental treatment is appropriate.
• Recognise patients requiring antibiotics, urgent escalation, or referral.
• Incorporate antimicrobial stewardship into routine dental practice while maintaining appropriate clinical judgement.
