Description

The Heart Failure Masterclass 2026 is an advanced, four-day educational programme designed to strengthen contemporary approaches to the prevention, diagnosis, assessment, and management of heart failure, with particular relevance to patients and healthcare systems in Kenya and the wider African region. The Masterclass brings together leading local and international experts through expert lectures, clinical cases, interactive panel discussions, and practical workshops. The programme covers the full spectrum of heart failure, from clinical assessment and decongestion to guideline-directed medical therapy, advanced imaging and haemodynamics, cardiomyopathies, valvular heart disease, cardio-oncology, arrhythmias, device therapy, and advanced heart failure management. A key focus is the practical application of current evidence and guidelines to real-world clinical practice, including the challenges and opportunities in East Africa and sub-Saharan Africa. Participants will also explore multidisciplinary heart failure care, referral pathways, advanced therapies, and strategies for developing and strengthening heart failure services in the region.

Objectives

By the end of the Heart Failure Masterclass, participants should be able to: Understand the contemporary spectrum of heart failure, including definitions, phenotypes, clinical presentation, and their implications for practice. Apply systematic approaches to the clinical assessment of heart failure, including history, examination, assessment of congestion, biomarkers, lung ultrasound, and echocardiography. Recognise and manage acute and decompensated heart failure, including the assessment and stabilisation of patients with complex haemodynamic profiles. Apply guideline-directed medical therapy in practice, including appropriate initiation, sequencing, titration, and optimisation of evidence-based heart failure therapies. Use practical approaches to managing common and complex heart failure presentations, including ischaemic cardiomyopathy, HFpEF, cardiomyopathies, valvular heart disease, and cardio-oncology-related heart failure. Interpret and apply advanced diagnostic and haemodynamic assessment, including echocardiography, pulmonary hypertension assessment, right-heart catheterisation, and other adjunctive monitoring approaches. Evaluate the role of device-based therapies, including CRT, ICDs, and other advanced interventions, and understand appropriate patient selection and follow-up. Recognise patients with advanced heart failure and understand timely referral pathways, including the role of mechanical circulatory support and LVADs. Integrate multidisciplinary and patient-centred approaches to heart failure care, including heart failure clinics, cardiac rehabilitation, and continuity of care from hospital to home. Identify opportunities to strengthen heart failure services in Kenya and East Africa, including protocols, registries, imaging, community-level burden assessment, and access to advanced therapies.
