Description

This Continuing Medical Education (CME) session focuses on the critical roles of nursing and pharmacy teams in the safe preparation, administration, and monitoring of subcutaneous Herceptin (Trastuzumab SC) in the management of HER2-positive breast cancer. The session will address pharmacology, dosing protocols, safe handling of biologics, injection technique, patient monitoring, and adverse effect management. Participants will also learn about patient education, adherence support, and multidisciplinary collaboration to optimize treatment outcomes.

Objectives

By the end of this CME session, participants will be able to: Pharmacology and Indications Describe the mechanism of action, indications, and benefits of Herceptin SC in HER2-positive breast cancer. Differentiate between intravenous and subcutaneous formulations of trastuzumab, including clinical considerations. Pharmacy Perspective Outline storage, reconstitution (if needed), handling, and dispensing requirements for biologics like Herceptin SC. Implement safety protocols for biologics, including infection control and cold chain management. Recognize and report medication errors and adverse drug reactions through pharmacovigilance systems. Nursing Perspective Demonstrate correct subcutaneous injection technique, site selection, and patient comfort measures. Monitor patients for infusion-related or injection-related reactions and initiate prompt interventions. Provide patient counseling on treatment expectations, adherence, and recognition of side effects. Patient-Centered Care Apply communication strategies to educate patients and families about biologic therapy. Encourage adherence and empower patients through education on home monitoring and follow-up. Multidisciplinary Collaboration Strengthen collaboration between nurses, pharmacists, oncologists, and other team members in delivering biologic therapy. Understand the role of guidelines and institutional protocols in ensuring safe, standardized care.
