Description

Defination-Diabetes mellitus is a chronic metabolic disorder characterized by sustained elevated blood glucose (hyperglycemia) resulting from defects in insulin secretion, action or both. Diabetes, if not well controlled leads to serious complications, resulting in multiple diseases or disorders that affect multiple body organs resulting to increased morbidity and premature death. Pathophysiology In people that are healthy (not living with diabetes), the pancreas secretes digestive enzymes and the hormones insulin and glucagon into the bloodstream to control the amount of glucose in the body. The release of insulin into the blood lowers the level of blood glucose by allowing glucose to enter the body cells, where it is metabolized leading to normal blood glucose levels. If blood glucose levels get too low, the pancreas secretes glucagon to stimulate the release of glucose from the liver, thus raising the levels of blood glucose to normal
