Prof. Elizabeth Bukusi
Prof. Bukusi (ObGyn), MPH, PhD, PGD (Research Ethics), Masters in Bioethics, Fellow of the African Academy of Sciences, earned her general medical degree and Masters in Obstetrics and Gynaecology degree from the University of Nairobi. She then earned a certificate in international health, MPH and a PhD from the University of Washington’s Department of Epidemiology, a post graduate diploma in Research Ethics from the University of Cape Town and a Masters in Bioethics from Centre for Bioethics and Culture at the Sindh Institute of Urology and Transplantation in Karachi. She is a certified IRB Professional. She is a Senior Principal Clinical Research Scientist at the Kenya Medical Research Institute (KEMRI), a Research Professor at the University of Washington (Departments of Obstetrics and Gynaecology and Global health), an honorary lecturer at Aga Khan University in Nairobi and Maseno University (Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology) and Volunteer Clinical faculty – Professor at the University of California San Francisco (Department of Obstetrics, Gynaecology & Reproductive Sciences). Prof. Bukusi, in collaboration with Dr. Craig Cohen at UCSF, established the KEMRI Research Care and Training Program in 1995. In addition to her substantial experience in conducting socio-behavioural and biomedical research and providing HIV care, mentoring, and training health care and research personnel to enhance local and international capacity, she has a strong interest in research and clinical ethics and the development of systems and structures for regulation of research at KEMRI and in the country. She was the chairperson/founding member of the Bioethics Society of Kenya, (BSK), a multidisciplinary, non-political, non-discriminatory, and not-for- profit organization with a primary objective of promoting high ethical standards in bio- medical research, medicine and health care in Kenya. She is a board member of AVAC, Chaired the WHO HRP Alliance (capacity building for RH research) 2016 to 2021, and is a trustee for the HIV Trust, and an Elected Fellow of the African Academy of Sciences (FAAS).
Miss Caroline Kithinji
Ms. Kithinji is the head of training at the Scientific and Ethics Review Unit (SERU) of the Kenya Medical Research Institute (KEMRI). She has 20 years of experience in Research Ethics Committee (REC) administration and training During this time, in addition to providing efficient and considered review of research protocols, she has trained and mentored young professionals in Biomedical ethics and research ethics committee administration. SERU, inaugurated in 2014, is a culmination of ten years of deliberate introduction of resources, both human and financial, into a secretariat that began with three individuals to a team of 14 well trained professionals. Her educational background includes an MSc in Medical Parasitology from the London Institute of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine (LSHTM) and an MBE in Biomedical Ethics from the Sindh Institute of Health Sciences/Center of Biomedical Ethics and Culture (CBEC), Karachi, Pakistan. She has a BSc in Biochemistry and Zoology from the University of Nairobi, Kenya and a graduate certificate in International Research Ethics from the Johns Hopkins Berman Institute of Bioethics, Baltimore.

  1. Prof. Nelly Mugo
    Prof. Nelly R. Mugo is a Senior Principal Clinical Research Scientist at the Kenya Medical Research Institute (KEMRI) and Research Professor at the University of Washington and a reproductive health specialist with over three decades of work experience. Her research work is mostly on reproductive health, with a focus on sexually transmitted infections targeting HIV and cervical cancer prevention. She leads a clinical research unit (PHRD), located in Thika Kenya, which conducts multiple observational, behavioural science studies and multi-site studies. Her cervical cancer prevention research has been on screening and treatment of pre-cancer lesions and human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccine. She is co-protocol chair for the Kenya Single-Dose HPV Vaccine Efficacy – ‘KEN-SHE’ study. Her research team has also worked on multi-site HIV prevention clinical trials including the Partners PrEP studies, from the proof-of-concept Partners PrEP study, Partners PrEP demonstration Project and the current on-going Partners Scale up Project. She has contributed to various Ministry of Health-Kenya and World Health Organization forums, guidelines committees and data safety monitoring boards. She is a committee member of the recently concluded ‘Evidence for Contraceptive Options and HIV Outcomes’ (ECHO) trial and has over 285 publications in peer-reviewed journals.

  3. Prof. Lillian Omutoko
    Prof. Lillian Omutoko is an Educationist and Bioethicist. She is an Associate Professor at the Department of Educational Management, Policy and Curriculum Studies, University of Nairobi. She holds a PhD in Education, a Master’s Degree in Educational Administration, a Master's Degree in Global Bioethics, from Anahuac University, Mexico, a Postgraduate Diploma in Health Research Ethics, Stellenbosch University, South Africa, and a Certificate in Responsible Conduct in International Research, University of Washington, USA. She has been involved in curriculum development of various courses in Education, Project Management, One Health and Research Ethics during Emergencies, Research Ethics, and Research Integrity. She has attended several workshops and conferences nationally and internationally. She has published widely. She is a member of the National Scientific Ethics Research Committee, Kenyatta National Hospital-University of Nairobi Ethics Research Committee; Bioethics Society of Kenya, and Africa Bioethics Consortium.   4. Prof. John WERU
    Prof. John Weru is an Associate Professor at the Aga Khan University Hospital (AKUHN). He is the chair of the Hospital Ethics Committee at AKUHN and the Vice-Chair of the global Aga Khan Ethics Review Board. He is the course lead for both the undergraduate and postgraduate bioethics courses at AKUHN. He is an adjunct faculty member with Mt. Kenya University, AMREF International University and the CBEC-KEMRI- Bioethics Training Initiative (CK-BTI) projects. He is a peer reviewer with multiple journals and has written peer reviewed articles and book chapters

  5. Dr. Victor Omollo
    Dr Omollo is a research scientist with a background in medicine and public health. He has worked at Kenya Medical Research Institute (KEMRI; Kisumu, Kenya) for six years. He has a keen interest in developing and testing interventions that will reduce the spread of HIV and other sexually transmitted infections. He is currently leading the pharmacy-delivered PrEP services projects in Western Kenya.

  6. Prof. Stephen Muhudhia
    Prof. Muhudhia is Consultant Paediatrician in clinical practice at The Nairobi Hospital. He is an adjunct professor of bioethics, and co director Africa Bioethics Initiative at Trinity International University in Illinois, USA. He is a part- time lecturer at Kabarak University, where he teaches bioethics to Master of Family Medicine students. Prof. Muhudhia is an adjunct faculty for the Master in Bioethics program at Amref International University and Mount Kenya University in Kenya. He is the Vice Chair of the Scientific and Ethics Review Unit, Committee C of Kenya Medical Research Institute. He is the current Chair of the Bioethics Society of Kenya. In addition to qualifications as a specialist paediatrician, he has a Master’s degree in Bioethics and Health Law and a Post Graduate Diploma in Biomedical Ethics.

  7. Prof. Aamir Jafarey
    Prof. Aamir Jafarey, FCPS, FRCS, MBE is Professor at the Centre of Biomedical Ethics and Culture (CBEC), SIUT. He is also a General Surgeon who did academic clinical practice at the Aga Khan University till 2016. Prof. Jafarey has been involved in bioethics education and research for over two decades and has been managing the Postgraduate Diploma and Master’s programs in Bioethics offered by CBEC since 2006. He served on Pakistan’s National Bioethics Committee for 8 years, and was involved in the research review process, in addition to serving on the Clinical Studies Committee of the Drug Regulatory Authority of Pakistan. He is currently serving as a member of the WHO Eastern Mediterranean Region Research Ethics Review Committee since 2017 and is a Co-Director of a Fogarty International Centre – National Institutes of Health funded CBEC-KEMRI Bioethics Training Initiative (CK-BTI) located in Nairobi, Kenya.

  8. Dr. Aasim Ahmad
    Dr. Amar Jesani is an independent researcher and teacher in bioethics and public health. He is a co-founder of the Forum for Medical Ethics Society and its journal, Indian Journal of Medical Ethics (www.ijme.in), published since 1993. He is its editor since 2012. He is also a co-founder of Anusandhan Trust (retired in 2013) and its institutions, CEHAT (Mumbai) & SATHI (Pune). He is a Visiting Professor at Yenepoya University, Mangalore (since 2011) and the Centre for Biomedical Ethics and Culture, Karachi (since 2010). He is a Member of the International Ethics Review Board of the Medicine Sans Frontiers (MSF) and the National Apex Committee for Stem Cell Research and Therapy (NAC SCRT) of the Government of India. He has co-authored and co-edited nine books - the last Co-edited with Purendra Prasad, titled Equity and Access:

  9. Dr. JAMES AYIEKO
    Dr. Ayieko is a medical doctor who holds an MPH from University of California, Berkeley and a PhD in Epidemiology from the University of Antwerp, Belgium. James’ career over the last decade has centered around HIV care and ways of improving treatment outcomes in low resource settings. His area of interest has been improving treatment outcomes by optimizing the HIV care cascade right from linkage of HIV infected individuals to care, retention and viral suppression. He has participated in designing, implementation and evaluation of various interventions aimed at improving care engagement among people living with HIV in rural Uganda and Kenya. Currently he works with the Kenya Medical Research Institute (KEMRI) as a research scientist and is an investigator in the SEARCH SAPPHIRE HIV treatment and Prevention trial as well as the SEARCH Youth trial.
