Description

Hypoxic Ischaemic Encephalopathy (HIE) Definition Perinatal asphyxia is characterized by clinical and laboratory evidence of acute and subacute brain injury due to hypoxia-ischemia. WHO definition- failure to initiate and sustain breathing at birth The primary causes of this condition are systemic hypoxemia and/or reduced blood flow. It causes about 23% of neonatal deaths worldwide

Objectives

Treatment Therapeutic hypothermia Perfusion and blood pressure management – mean blood pressure above 40-60 mmhg to avoid decreased cerebral perfusion Fluid and electrolytes management Treatment of seizures Feeding- enteric feeding once bowel sounds are present Control of sugars Adequate ventilation- to avoid hypercapnia, Occupational therapy Management of hypocalcemia or hypomagnesemia
