Description
Endodontic pain is a complex symptom that drives a patient to the dentist in search of relief. In such scenarios, patients pose a number of questions: Is there anything you can do to relieve the pain? Will the treatment be painful? Will I feel pain after the treatment? The clinician thus must be able to come up with an accurate diagnosis and treatment plan. The understanding of basic pain biology, etiology of pulp and periradicular disease, and management of endodontic pain is thus paramount. Disease involving the pulp dentin complex and concomitant pain is caused by caries, trauma or restorative procedures. In spite of the fact that there are differences in the disease processes, eventually microbiological factors are of critical importance.
Objectives
1. Understand the basic pain biology of the pulp and periradicular tissues
2. Highlight causes of endodontic pain
3. Highlight endodontic pain predisposing factors and preventive strategies
4. Discuss analgesics and therapeutic recommendations for management of endodontic pain
